WITHIN THE SCOPE OF MUSEUM EDUCATION - MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART

The open–air museum Europos Parkas on May 29-30, 2003 invited educational specialists from museums that present modern and contemporary art to Europos Parkas to participate at the international conference Within the Scope of Museum Education – Modern and Contemporary Art. Today the role of the museum as an educator is vitally important in the education of both children and adults. This leads not only to the deeper appreciation of the work of art and various cultures, but also to the deeper perception of the self. The aim of the conference is to improve the quality of educational programmes, to expand the notion of innovative ways of their implementation and the accession of target groups.

Kaija Kaitavuori (Kiasma Contemporary Art Museum, Finland),

Teddy Josephsen (Louisiana Modern Art Museum, Denmark),

Anna Johansson (Wånas Foundation, Sweden),

Violeta Jaseviciute (Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis National Museum of Art, Lithuania),

Jurate Stauskaite, Arvydas Baltrunas, Linas Liandzbergis (Vilnius Art School for Children and Youth, Lithuania)

 

 

During the conference the following topics related to art education were discussed:

•   The principles of organizing educational activities. Examples of collaboration with artists and other institutions;
•   Educational programmes and the criteria for their implementation. Ways of creating feedback;
•   Work with various target groups. Audience development;
•   Education and new information technologies.

Participants of the conference were able not only to passively absorb the knowledge, but also to initiate a dialogue with the lecturers during discussions. In addition, a creative action was implemented by 120 school children from Vilnius Art School for Children and Youth in order to share the abilities to interpret contemporary sculpture. The themes of the action: A Web of Ideas, Live Sculptures, The Potential Growth, The Space of the Recognized Decline, etc.
