||
Europa Nostra, the most influential heritage organisation in Europe, has recognised Liubavas Manor Watermill Museum near Vilnius a prime example in conservation of European cultural heritage, which is to receive European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Award to highlight the excellence in restoration, done with love and care. The museum represents a conversion of one of the landmarks of cultural heritage, done at the initiative of sculptor Gintaras Karosas in 2011. The project had the support of the Financial Mechanisms of the European Economic Area and Norway.
Out of the 226 applications from 31 countries, the independent experts of Europa Nostra chose 16 that will be awarded for ultimate achievements in the category of heritage conservation. Only two cultural heritage sites located in post-communist European countries will receive this award.
Europa Nostra is a pan-European organization aiming to supervise the formation and enforcement of heritage policies across Europe. Europa Nostra is seen as the voice of cultural heritage in Europe. It brings together and represents 250 non-governmental and non-profit organisations from more than 50 European countries, with a combined membership of at least 5 million citizens and stands in close cooperation with the European Union, the European Council and UNESCO.
Gintaras Karosas, President of Public Institution EUROPOS PARKAS, says: “The EU prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra award – the Oscar for Europe’s heritage – to the Liubavas Manor Watermill Museum draws people’s attention to Lithuania and at the same time it will encourage people from all over the world to visit this landmark of technological heritage. Liubavas Manor Watermill Museum is so small – just like Lithuania itself, amidst the rest of the European states. Therefore, this honourable award is also an award to the whole of Lithuania and its people who are not indifferent to the preservation of our heritage.”
The National Award Ceremony took place on 18 September 2012.
